Butterfly valve selection begins with the actual pipeline duty: nominal size, medium, pressure, temperature, connection standard and required operating method. A correctly specified valve package helps avoid insufficient torque, unsuitable sealing materials and installation mismatches.
1. Confirm the line size and connection standard
Start with the pipe nominal diameter and flange standard. Confirm whether the project requires wafer, lug or flanged construction, as well as the pressure class and available face-to-face installation space. For replacement projects, compare the existing valve dimensions and drilling standard before ordering.
2. Match materials to the medium
| Selection item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Body and disc | Corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and project material standard. |
| Seat | Compatibility with medium, temperature, shut-off requirement and expected operating cycles. |
| Stem and fasteners | Corrosion exposure, marine environment and maintenance requirement. |
For water, seawater, gas, slurry or chemical duty, specify the actual medium and concentration. Final material selection should be confirmed against the project datasheet and operating limits.
3. Select manual, pneumatic or electric operation
Manual gear operation is often suitable for accessible valves with lower operating frequency. Pneumatic actuation supports fast remote operation and defined fail positions. Electric actuation is useful where electrical control and position feedback are required. In every case, actuator torque must account for valve break torque, differential pressure, seat friction and a practical safety margin.
4. Prepare a complete RFQ
Send the valve type, DN/NPS size, pressure rating, flange standard, medium, temperature, body/disc/seat materials, actuator requirement, quantity, destination and required certificates. A drawing or line list enables faster technical confirmation.
