Butterfly valves provide compact quarter-turn isolation and control for a broad range of pipeline applications. A suitable valve depends on more than diameter: the connection style, pressure rating, disc and seat materials, medium, temperature and automation requirement must all work together.
Common butterfly valve body styles
| Type | Typical use | Key selection point |
|---|---|---|
| Wafer butterfly valve | Compact installation between flanges | Confirm flange standard, alignment and the permitted piping arrangement |
| Lug butterfly valve | Applications needing a lugged body configuration | Check pressure, end-of-line requirements and bolting details |
| Flanged butterfly valve | Heavier-duty pipeline and project specifications | Verify flange drillings, face-to-face dimensions and pressure class |
| Double/triple eccentric | Higher-performance or demanding temperature/pressure services | Specify seat design, torque and shutoff requirement carefully |
Disc and seat material selection
The disc and seat are the main wet components. EPDM, NBR, PTFE and metal seats offer different capabilities. Select them against the actual medium, operating temperature, pressure, cleaning agents and corrosion conditions. For seawater, chemical or high-temperature service, material selection should be reviewed alongside project specifications.
Manual, pneumatic or electric operation
Manual levers and gear operators suit local operation. Pneumatic actuators are often selected for fast cycling and fail-safe spring-return duties. Electric actuators are common where electrical power, remote feedback or modulating control is required. For all automated valves, confirm required torque, duty cycle, supply, control signal and desired fail position.
Butterfly valve selection checklist
- Medium, solids content, pressure, temperature and design standard
- Nominal size, flange standard and available installation space
- Wafer, lug or flanged body; concentric or eccentric design
- Body, disc, stem and seat material compatibility
- On/off or modulating control; manual, pneumatic or electric actuation
- Required certification for marine, fire-safe, water, HVAC or project service
