Cryogenic service changes the behavior of metals, elastomers and packing. A valve that performs in ambient conditions may not remain suitable after thermal contraction and repeated low-temperature cycles. Selection must follow the approved project specification and relevant test requirements.
Material selection is a system decision
Valve body, disc or closure member, stem, bolts, seat, packing and gaskets must be assessed together. Austenitic stainless steels are frequently selected where low-temperature toughness and corrosion resistance are needed. Exact grades, cast-versus-forged requirements and impact testing must be confirmed for the stated minimum design temperature.
Why extended bonnets matter
An extended bonnet raises the packing area away from the cold zone. This helps protect packing performance and reduces the risk of external icing around the operating mechanism. The necessary extension length depends on valve orientation, insulation arrangement, temperature and project standard.
Information required before quotation
- Medium and minimum/maximum design temperature
- Pressure rating, size and connection standard
- Valve type and required flow direction
- Body, trim and seat material requirements
- Testing, certificates and documentation requirements
- Manual, pneumatic or electric operating requirement
Engineering confirmation is essential
This guide is a preliminary selection aid, not a substitute for the project material specification. Share your datasheet or P&ID so the valve construction and materials can be checked before manufacture.
