Gate valves and globe valves are both widely used in industrial piping, but they serve different operating priorities. Selecting the wrong type can create unnecessary pressure loss, difficult control, excessive wear or maintenance issues. Begin with the valve duty, then confirm the pressure class, medium, temperature, material and actuation requirement.
Comparison at a glance
| Factor | Gate valve | Globe valve |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | On/off isolation | Isolation and controlled throttling |
| Flow path | Relatively straight when fully open | Changes direction through the body |
| Pressure drop | Usually lower when fully open | Usually higher because of internal flow path |
| Part-open operation | Generally avoid continuous throttling | Better suited to regulating flow when correctly specified |
| Operation | Linear, multi-turn stem movement | Linear, multi-turn stem movement |
Choose a gate valve for isolation duty
Full-bore pipeline flow
When the valve is normally kept fully open or fully closed, a gate valve can be a practical isolation solution with low resistance in the open position.
Large-line shutoff
Gate valves are common in utility, water, oil, gas and process lines where controlled throttling is not required.
Clear operating discipline
Specify the valve for isolation and avoid leaving it partly open for long periods unless the design is verified for that duty.
Choose a globe valve for regulation
A globe valve is often selected when the application needs more controlled adjustment of flow. Its body design produces higher pressure drop, so the system must allow for that loss. Seat, plug, stem and packing selections should match the medium and operating temperature.
Specification checklist
- Is the required duty isolation, throttling or both?
- Medium, pressure, temperature and pressure differential
- Line size, end connection and applicable standard
- Body, trim, seat and packing material compatibility
- Manual, electric, pneumatic or control-valve actuation
- Marine certificates, fire-safe, low-temperature or corrosion requirements
