A pneumatic pinch valve isolates flow by applying compressed air around a flexible elastomer sleeve. The flow path is straight and unobstructed when open, making the design useful where conventional valves can clog, wear or retain solids.
Where air operated pinch valves are used
Slurry and abrasive media
Mining, tailings, cement, sand, ash, ceramic and wastewater applications where the sleeve protects the valve body from the media.
Fibrous or solid-laden flow
Pulp, paper, biomass and process streams containing fibres or suspended solids that can obstruct narrow valve cavities.
Corrosive and chemical service
With compatible sleeve selection, pinch valves can support chemical or corrosive process lines where the wetted elastomer needs to match the media.
Selection points that affect reliability
| Selection input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Medium and solids characteristics | Particle size, sharpness, concentration and fibre content affect sleeve wear and the required bore size. |
| Pressure and temperature | Process conditions determine body rating and whether the selected sleeve material remains suitable in service. |
| Control-air supply | State the available compressed-air pressure and quality. The actuator must close the sleeve reliably under the process condition. |
| Sleeve material | Natural rubber, EPDM, NBR and other elastomer options should be chosen only after reviewing abrasion, chemical and temperature requirements. |
| Control function | Specify manual, solenoid-controlled, position-feedback or automated package requirements and the desired default position. |
Pinch valve RFQ checklist
