Check Valve Types and Selection Guide

Choose a check valve configuration that prevents reverse flow while matching the pipeline, medium, flow conditions and installation direction.

Check valves operate automatically to prevent reverse flow. They are essential in pump discharge, water treatment, marine, HVAC and process piping systems. The best design is not determined by size alone: flow velocity, cracking pressure, installation orientation and surge conditions can all affect performance.

Common check valve types

TypeTypical strengthsSelection notes
Swing check valveSimple design for many water and industrial pipeline dutiesConfirm installation direction, disc travel space and suitability for pulsating flow
Lift check valveSuitable for applications with stable flow and compatible body/seat constructionConsider pressure drop and manufacturer orientation requirements
Dual-plate check valveCompact face-to-face dimension and relatively fast closingUseful where space is limited or reverse-flow effects need attention
Wafer check valveLightweight installation between flangesVerify flange standard, pressure class and disc/seat material

Key selection factors

Check valves for pump discharge lines

A check valve is often installed immediately downstream of a pump to prevent reverse rotation and backflow after shutdown. In these applications, examine the pump curve, line velocity and potential surge. A compact dual-plate or nozzle-style design may be considered where rapid response is required; a swing check can be appropriate when the system design supports it.

Ask for a matched check valve quotation

Send the medium, line size, flow rate, pressure, temperature, pipe orientation and flange standard. Jinkon can recommend a check valve configuration and provide technical documentation for industrial and marine projects.
