A pneumatic actuated butterfly valve combines a quarter-turn valve with an air-powered actuator. Selection depends on the complete service condition: the valve type and materials, actual operating torque, available air supply, control function, required fail position and feedback or monitoring interface.
1. Define the valve duty
Isolation duty
For open/close operation, specify operating frequency, command method, limit switches and manual override.
Modulating duty
For flow or process regulation, specify the control signal, positioner, feedback requirement and expected cycling duty.
Process condition
State medium, pressure, temperature, line size, connection and disc/seat material requirements.
2. Choose the pneumatic actuator action
| Actuator type | Typical selection consideration |
|---|---|
| Double acting | Air drives both directions; confirm available air pressure, control valve or solenoid arrangement and operating torque. |
| Spring return | Provides a defined action on loss of air. Specify fail closed or fail open and confirm available torque throughout the stroke. |
| Positioner package | Used for modulating duty; confirm 4–20 mA or other command, feedback, air quality and required control accuracy. |
3. Air supply, accessories and feedback
State the instrument air pressure and quality, solenoid voltage, limit switch box, position feedback, manual override, enclosure rating and cable entry requirements. These components should be reviewed together with the valve torque and mounting interface, not added after actuator selection.
4. Pneumatic butterfly valve RFQ checklist
- Valve type, size, pressure class, connection, disc and seat materials
- Medium, temperature, pressure and expected operating frequency
- Required torque, actuator action and available air supply
- On-off or modulating function; solenoid, positioner and feedback requirements
- Fail action, certifications, quantity and delivery destination
